Le premier tour des élections départementales a donné des sueurs froides aux opposants du Front National. Finalement, le PS occupe la pool position avec 43,39 % des suffrages exprimés contre 25,34 % pour les candidats du parti de Marine Le Pen. Un résultat qu’il convient de nuancer en raison de la forte abstention (53,29 %). À 15 voix près, le tandem Dumon-Iglesias aurait pu se retrouver au deuxième tour, mais un résultat insuffisant obtenu à Fumay, commune pourtant dirigée par Mario Iglesias, a conduit les candidats UMP à la défaite. Le très mauvais score du PCF (6,24 %) confirme le déclin du parti des travailleurs dans un bassin d’emploi miné par les fermetures d’usines et la précarité.
